Responsible nature travel in Peru

November 16, 2020

Peru offers endless options for nature travel. Experience them responsibly!

With its incomparably varied geography and biological diversity, Peru is one of the best places in the world to experience nature. In fact, Peru has a total of 76 state protected natural areas, and many more regional and private conservation areas! And so, to those travelers wanting to use their Peru vacation to get out into nature, at Andean Adventures Peru we recommend that you try to reduce as much as possible your impact upon the natural areas you visit.

When you find yourself in a pristine natural environment during your Peru holiday, try to move carefully and quietly, so you won’t disturb the local wildlife or destroy the plants you have come to enjoy. And never try to gather plants or flowers: always respect the integrity of the ecosystem that has been conserved so that your own and future generations can appreciate it!

When you are exploring nature as part of your Peru itinerary, whether you are in the Andes, the Amazon, or Peru’s Pacific coast, do not use food or noises to attract birds or other wild animals just so you can see them more clearly. You should never try to feed or touch wildlife. Just be content to observe animals quietly and respectfully; keep your distance, and if you want get a closer look, invest in a good pair of binoculars or a telephoto lens for your camera!

When you travel to a protected area, make sure you know what the conservation rules are, and ask your local guide for their recommendations. If you’re not sure how to behave in a protected natural area, just remember that the best thing you can do for our planet is to leave no trace of your visit! Take your garbage away with you and, if you can, try to spend a little time picking up any garbage that other travelers or local people may have left behind.

When you’re trekking or hiking in the Cusco region or other parts of the Peruvian Andes, always use the toilet facilities provided, and where there are none available, be sure to bury your waste. Don’t light campfires in wilderness areas and, of course, take care to never contaminate water sources. And when your camping, or even in your hotel, always try to use biodegradable products, including soap, shampoo and detergents.
