How to prepare for your Peru vacation

You’ve finally decided to book your Peru trip, including the fabulous ruins of Machu Picchu and the islands of Lake Titicaca. You can’t wait to admire the Vinicunca and Palcoyo rainbow mountains, or to spot Amazon wildlife in Peru’s jungle. You have everything planned and now it’s time to pack your bags. This might seem a simple task, but it requires careful preparation to ensure you’ll be ready for the different climates you’ll encounter as you travel in Peru. For a list of the essential items you should pack for your Peru vacation, read on…

What to wear in Peru?

Layers: The secret to packing for a varied climate is layering. Whether you are planning a Cusco tour, a visit to Machu Picchu or an exploration of the Peruvian rainforest, make sure you pack short and long-sleeved t-shirts, as well as sweaters and a good windbreaker. Waterproof jacket or rain poncho: Depending on the region and the season, you might encounter rain in Peru. In Cusco, for example, you can expect storms and heavy downpours during the rainy season from November to April. And in the Peruvian Amazon you are likely to encounter rain at any time of the year. Make sure you pack a waterproof jacket or rain poncho! Thermal t-shirts: A warm thermal t-shirt is extremely useful when exploring the Peruvian Andes. Some of the most popular and interesting travel destinations in Peru, such as the city of Cusco or Rainbow Mountain, are located at high altitudes where the temperature drops considerably at night, particularly in the dry season. Comfortable hiking boots and walking sandals: Be ready to walk during your holiday in Peru! When you explore Amazon forest trails or Inca ruins you’ll need comfortable footwear. For cold and rainy climates, opt for waterproof hiking boots to keep your feet warm and protected, and when you visit the Amazon or the coast, it is best to opt for walking sandals. Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen: The sun shines bright in Peru, especially at high altitudes where the sun’s rays are particularly intense. Regardless of your skin tone, you will need to protect yourself during sunny days in Peru! Swimwear: Remember to pack swimwear. You’ll have opportunities to swim at Peru’s Pacific beaches, and to swim or kayak in the Amazon basin. And even in the high Andes, there’ll be the chance to bathe in natural hot springs, like those in the Lares valley or at Aguas Calientes, near the ruins of Machu Picchu!
