Peru’s varied geography makes it one of the best places in the world for long treks or short hikes

Looking to compare trekking options in Peru? Our own travel professionals offer their selection of spectacular walking routes in the Cusco region, for novice hikers or experienced trekkers.

The Classic Inca Trail is the most famous route in Peru and is regularly voted one of the world’s best treks. The incredibly varied geography, ranging from tropical forests to high plains and snowcapped peaks, combined with an extraordinary number of Inca period archaeological sites, make this trekking route totally unique. And, of course, what better way could there be to end a magnificent walk along ancient Inca pathways than your first sight of Machu Picchu, stretched out below on its saddle between two mountains?

The Mount Salkantay trek is another favorite among trekking fans. Its spectacular 4- or 5-day route offers incredible high Andean scenery filled with glacial lakes and grazing herds of llamas, with some of the Cusco region’s highest peaks creating the setting for a challenging but richly rewarding trekking experience.

And if you’re looking for contact with the typical culture of the Andes, as well as great scenery, the Lares trek is a perfect option! Hike high above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, before descending through a peaceful river valley to the unique Inca period town of Ollantaytambo, and end your trek with a relaxing ride to the ruins of Machu Picchu, on one of the world’s best train journeys.

Another stunning route in the Cusco region is the Choquequirao trek. This Inca city is often called the sister city to Machu Picchu, and the trail leading there passes some of the most dramatic scenery in Peru, composed of snowcapped peaks, arid slopes studded with cacti, and dense cloud forest filled with hummingbirds and other endemic birdlife.

For lovers of trekking and hiking, there is no better option in Peru than the Cusco region. And when you’ve finished your walk, the city of Cusco offers countless attractions of its own!
